The Indian Standards Institute (ISI) was inaugurated on 6 January 1947 as a body under the Societies Registration Act, of 1860. As India's countrywide standards body, the agency had a clean mandate to prepare and promote standards for adoption by the Indian enterprise. Later, in order to improve the quality of products and provide the benefits of standardization to the general public, the Indian Standards Institute started implementing the Certification Mark Scheme under the Indian Standards Institute (Certification Marks) Act, of 1952. This system was formally enacted in 1955 and is widely known as the "ISI Marking Scheme".
